Breakdown
How the numbers work
OfferUp’s fee model is a local-vs-shipped fork. That is the whole decision:
- Local pickup: meet the buyer, take payment yourself. OfferUp charges $0. You keep the full item price.
- Shipped (nationwide): OfferUp takes a 12.9% service fee on the item’s final price only. Buyer-paid shipping is not in the fee base. Floor: $1.99 per shipped order.
- Processing is bundled into that 12.9% for shipped sales — there is no separate Stripe/PayPal line on the seller side.
- Promote / bump is optional and paid separately; enter what you spent if you boosted the listing.
Unlike Facebook Marketplace (10% on item + shipping + tax), OfferUp’s 12.9% ignores shipping. On a $50 item with $8 buyer shipping, OfferUp fee is $6.45 (12.9% of $50), not 12.9% of $58.
Example: $50 shipped sale, no promote. Fee max(12.9% × $50, $1.99) = $6.45. You keep $43.55 before product and packing. Same $50 local: keep $50.00. Shipping convenience costs you $6.45 in platform fees.
Floor cliff: below about $15.43, the $1.99 minimum beats 12.9%. A $10 shipped sale pays $1.99 (19.9% effective). Cheap items usually belong on local pickup.
FAQ
Does OfferUp charge fees on shipping?
No. Per OfferUp Help, the 12.9% service fee is on the item’s final price excluding shipping costs. The buyer still pays shipping separately; that amount is not part of your fee base.
When does the $1.99 minimum apply?
Whenever 12.9% of the item price is less than $1.99 — roughly sales under $15.43. This tool flags that floor in the breakdown.
Is local pickup really free?
Yes for the OfferUp platform fee. You meet in person and handle payment outside OfferUp shipping checkout. Listing stays free either way. Meetup risk and payment risk are on you — those are not modeled here.
How is this different from Facebook Marketplace?
Facebook Marketplace shipped checkout is typically 10% of the full buyer total (item + shipping + tax) with an $0.80 minimum. OfferUp is 12.9% of the item only, $1.99 minimum. On high shipping charges, OfferUp’s “exclude shipping” base can win even at a higher percent.
Is this exact to the penny OfferUp will take?
No. It is an estimate from OfferUp Help “Shipping Policy” (12.9% of final item price excluding shipping, $1.99 minimum for shipped sales; $0 for local). Promotions, refunds, shipping-label overages, and account-level changes can alter the real payout. Confirm the fee shown when you accept an offer in the app.
