Breakdown
How the numbers work
Facebook Marketplace is a local-vs-shipped fork — but the shipped math is different from OfferUp:
- Local pickup: meet the buyer and take payment yourself (cash, Venmo, etc.). Meta does not charge the Marketplace Selling Fee on that path. Modeled keep = full item price.
- Shipped (Marketplace checkout): Meta charges Individual Sellers 10% of the entire transaction — item price + buyer-paid shipping + Applicable Taxes — with a $0.80 minimum per order.
- Tax and shipping raise the fee. Unlike OfferUp (12.9% on the item only), Facebook’s 10% includes shipping and tax in the base.
- Boost / promote is optional ad spend you enter separately; it is not part of Meta’s published Selling Fee.
Example: $50 item + $8 shipping, no tax. Fee base = $58. Selling fee = max(10% × $58, $0.80) = $5.80. You keep $44.20 before product and packing (buyer shipping is collected then spent on the label). Same $50 local: keep $50.00. Shipping convenience costs you $5.80 in platform fees on this sale.
Floor cliff: below an $8.00 fee base, the $0.80 minimum beats 10%. A $5 shipped item with $0 shipping pays $0.80 (16% effective). Cheap shipped listings often belong on local pickup instead.
FAQ
Does Facebook Marketplace charge fees on local sales?
For typical local pickup where the buyer pays you outside Marketplace checkout, Meta does not charge the 10% Selling Fee. Listing is free. Meetup and payment risk are on you — those are not modeled here.
Is the 10% on item only, or on shipping and tax too?
On the entire transaction. Meta’s Commerce Product Merchant Policies state the Selling Fee is calculated on sale price(s), any shipping fees, and Applicable Taxes. A $50 item with $8 shipping is 10% of $58, not 10% of $50.
When does the $0.80 minimum apply?
Whenever 10% of the fee base (item + shipping + tax) is less than $0.80 — fee bases under $8.00. This tool flags that floor in the breakdown.
How is this different from OfferUp?
OfferUp shipped is 12.9% of the item only with a $1.99 minimum. Facebook Marketplace shipped checkout is 10% of item + shipping + tax with an $0.80 minimum. On high buyer-paid shipping, OfferUp’s “exclude shipping” base can win even at a higher percent; on low shipping and cheap items, Facebook’s lower floor can win.
Is this exact to the penny Meta will take?
No. It is an estimate from Meta’s Commerce Product Merchant Policies Selling fees section (10% per transaction, $0.80 minimum, base includes sale price, shipping, and Applicable Taxes for Individual Sellers on shipped checkout). Business/Page seller paths, label adjustments, chargebacks ($20 fee noted in the same policy), refunds, and regional availability can change the real payout. Confirm the fee preview in Marketplace / Commerce Manager before you commit to a price.
