Alibris seller fee calculator

Work out the Alibris commission, the Basic $1 item fee, and the $1.75 closing fee on your shipping credit. Then see what you clear after postage, how partner-channel sales change it, and how many sales a month make Gold cheaper than Basic. Nothing is uploaded.

The order

US sellers. Alibris sets the shipping charge and credits it to you, less a $1.75 closing fee per credit. You don't set shipping yourself.

Your costs

Your month

Retail: 15% of list price, $0.50 minimum, flat $60 over $400. Partner: 20% or 15% + $0.25, whichever is greater; only items at $300 or less go to partners. Basic: $1.00 per item sold + $19.99 a year. AbeBooks Basic and Biblio Option A charge on item + shipping, so they're priced here with the Alibris standard credit as the shipping charge. On PangoBooks the buyer pays the label, so your postage drops out. Monthly fees aren't included. All US rates.

    How the numbers work

Commission. On Alibris's own consumer and library sites you pay 15% of the list price or $0.50, whichever is greater. Above $400 it becomes a flat $60, so the rate keeps falling as the price rises: 12% at $500, 6% at $1,000. Below $3.33 the $0.50 minimum is the bigger number. Partner channels (eBay, Walmart, Books-A-Million, Ingram and others, plus Autobuy) charge 20% or 15% + $0.25, whichever is greater. Only items at $300 or less are passed to partners.

Program fee. Basic adds $1.00 for each item sold and $19.99 a year. Gold drops the $1 and charges a flat monthly fee based on last month's average listings, even if you're on vacation hold. Card processing and fraud protection are included in both.

Shipping. Alibris charges the buyer a fixed shipping amount and passes it to you, minus a variable closing fee on each credit. That's $1.75 for US sellers. Whether you come out ahead on shipping depends on your real postage.

Example: a $12 book sells on Alibris.com with standard shipping and you're on Basic. Commission is 15% of $12, which is $1.80. Add the $1.00 item fee. The $4.49 shipping credit, less the $1.75 closing fee, nets $2.74. Alibris pays you $11.94. After $4.00 postage and a $2 book cost, you clear $5.94. The same book through a partner channel costs $2.40 in commission (20%), so you clear $5.34.

    FAQ

How much does Alibris charge sellers?

On sales through Alibris's own consumer and library sites you pay 15% of the list price or $0.50, whichever is greater, and a flat $60 on items priced over $400. Basic sellers also pay $1.00 per item sold and $19.99 a year. Gold sellers pay a flat monthly fee from $20 instead of the $1. A $1.75 variable closing fee (US sellers) comes off each shipping credit. Card processing is included in the commission.

What does Alibris charge on partner sales like eBay or Walmart?

Alibris's policies and help pages say partner-channel sales cost 20% commission or 15% + $0.25, whichever is greater. Autobuy orders count as partner orders. Alibris only sends items priced at $300 or less to partners, so the most you pay on a partner sale is $60. The short footnote on the program-fees page words it as "20% or $0.25"; the two only differ on items under $5.

Is Alibris Gold or Basic cheaper?

The commission is the same on both. Basic costs $1 per item sold plus $19.99 a year (about $1.67 a month). Gold costs a flat $20 a month for up to 2,000 average listings, with no per-item fee. At that tier Gold is cheaper once you sell about 19 items a month. Basic is only open to booksellers with fewer than 1,000 items, and to all music and movie sellers.

What is the Alibris variable closing fee?

The buyer pays a set shipping charge, and Alibris credits the full amount to you minus a variable closing fee on each shipping credit. For US sellers it is $1.75 for books and for music and movies, standard or expedited. A US standard book credit is $4.49 for the first item and $3.49 for each additional item, so you net $2.74 and $1.74. This calculator applies one closing fee per item.

Does Alibris still charge 10%, 8%, 6% or 5% on books over $500?

That ladder comes from Alibris's 2007 Basic seller tutorial PDF. The current policies, help and program-fees pages say 15% (minimum $0.50) up to $400 and a flat $60 commission above $400, so this calculator uses those.
